LP, Vinyl record album

A great session from John Klemmer – a real giant on the tenor, with a sound that long deserves to be revived! Klemmer's blowing here on straight tenor and with some electronic effects on the horn – and he's working with a hip Chicago soul jazz combo that includes Phil Upchurch on bass, Morris Jennings on drums, Pete Cosey on guitar, and Richard Thompson on piano and organ. The cuts are all pretty straight for Klemmer – and have that wonderful mix of styles that you'd find in the Cadet studios of the late 60s, with bits of rock, soul, and funk working their way into the mix. Titles include "Excursion #2", "My Heart Sings", "Third Stone From The Sun", "Free Soul", and "Children Of The Earth Flames". (Orange label pressing. Cover has a cutout notch.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Magic & Movement
Impulse, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
Excellent work by Klemmer – filled with the kind of fire and emotion that you don't get on many of his other records! The set was recorded live at two different venues – and it's a choppy slightly-funky batch of modal soul jazz tunes, with an approach that makes it feel like a lost ... LP, Vinyl record album

Playin' For Keeps
Cadet, 1966. Very Good
Tremendous work from an alto player with a very unique conception – a player who was unlike Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, or some of his precursors on the instrument – and instead really took off in bold new directions, like Lou Donaldson or fellow Chicagoan Sonny Cox in the mid 60s! ... Chess/Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
Forget everything you know about Woody Herman – and enjoy this amazing record! The album compiles sides that Woody recorded at the end of the 60s, when he was working with the Chess/Cadet team on some fantastic funky big band material. Dancing In The Street
Cadet, 1967. Very Good Gatefold
A late 60s groover from the second Ramsey Lewis trio – the one that features Cleveland Eaton on bass and Maurice White on drums, both doing a pretty great job of filling the spot vacated by Eldee Young and Red Holt! The album's a live one, cut in the successful mode of Ramsey's records with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fried Buzzard
Cadet, 1965. Very Good+
A live set recorded in 1965 – and more straight ahead soul jazz than Lou's later funk work on Blue Note, even though Leo Morris/Idris Muhammad is on drums. The album is a nice transitional session, though, with a good lounge jazz feel, and some nice long cuts like "Fried Buzzard", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good
One of McDuff's fantastic Cadet LPs, and one that features the funky funky organist in a set of crazy arrangements written by him and Richard Evans. An amazing mix of McDuff's soul jazz organ sound with the genius that was the Chess/Cadet studio system of the late 60's – and one that yields ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blowing In The Wind
Cadet, 1966. Very Good
A swingin' set of piano/tenor groovers – played by Poppa Lou and his groovy Argo/Cadet combo that included Herman Foster on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and a young Idris Muhammad (Leo Morris) on drums. The tunes have a swinging easy groove, similar to some of Lou's early 60s work on Blue Note. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Heavy Exposure
Cadet, 1969. Very Good
Excellent stuff – a record that we love it to death, and listen to all the time! Woody Herman's band meets the soulful arrangements of Richard Evans, and the whole thing cooks nicely in the Chess studios in Chicago. The result is a tasty blend of soulful big band tracks, with a strident ... LP, Vinyl record album

Take A Bryant Step
Cadet, 1967. Very Good
A great album of jazzy tracks that features the hard left-hand piano of Ray Bryant over sweet soul arrangements by Richard Evans, in the same style that Cadet used for some of Ramsey Lewis' best work from the time! Ray also arranged a few of the cuts, in a mode that's just like Evans' – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Beyond The Blue Horizon
CTI, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
A great early CTI session by George Benson, and one of the most stripped-down, straight-ahead funky records he did for the label! There's a sharpness here that's different than the larger feel of some of Benson 's later records – a sound that almost links back to his soul jazz roots in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1971. Very Good+
A beautiful blend of jazz, voices, and soul – a landmark record in Max Roach's vocal experimental tradition, and a fitting companion piece to Billy Harper's classic Capra Black album – an equally soulful blend of styles! Baby Batter
Janus, Late 60s. Very Good+
A classic bit of funky guitar by Harvey Mandel – similar to some of Dennis Coffey's early work in that it's got full on guitar power, very much inspired by heavy rock, filtered through an approach that's also got plenty of funk in it! The killer track here is the classic "Baby ... LP, Vinyl record album
