CD (Item 597392) Saungu, 2010 — Condition: New Copy

A tribute to the music of Mongo Santamaria – but put together in a way that really takes the sound to new places too! The project is headed by Jose Rizo of Jazz On The Latin Side fame – and features a great lineup with Justo Almario on tenor, Danilo Lozano on flute, Oscar Hernandez on piano, Ramon Banda on timbales, and Joey DeLeon on congas – plus a bit of vocals from Adonis Puentes – and guest work from Hubert Laws on flute and Poncho Sanchez on congas. The style is fluid, and very jazzy – definitely with roots in Mongo's music of the 60s and 70s, but almost leaning more towards his later west coast sides of the 80s and beyond – which really helped influence the generation of players performing the music. Some titles are classics from older Santamaria recordings, while others are newer tributes by the group – and tracks include "Asi Es La Vida", "Las Guajiras", "Bluchanga", "Bubba Boogaloo", "Siempre En Ti", "Que Maraviloso", "Cruzan", and "Guajira At The Blackhawk".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
