One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by crack drummer Charlie Persip – and a great record that you might have missed because Howard Rumsey's name is bigger on the cover than Charlie's! The album's one of Rumsey's "Lighthouse Series" sides of the 50s – but it's a lot harder-driving and more energy-filled than most of the other Lighthouse-related sides coming out of LA at the time. Half the record features Charlie's group – a set of east coasters that includes Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, and Wynton Kelly – and the other part features some of the players from that ensemble mixing it up with drummer Stan Levey and other LA talents that include Frank Rosolino, Conte Candoli, Bob Cooper, and others. In all, the album's a great meeting of east and west coast hardbop styles – with short driving tracks that include "Reggie Of Chester", "Celedia", "Moto", "The Champ", and "Wildwood".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Blue Note (Japan), 1957. New Copy
Don't let the cover fool you – because the album's not the Hank Mobley album with John Jenkins on alto, nor the Blue Note 1550 quintet session – but instead some unreleased material with the great Sonny Clark on piano! The group's a five piece, with Kenny Dorham on trumpet – but ... CD

Two Bones
Blue Note (Japan), 1958. New Copy
One of the hippest Curtis Fuller albums for Blue Note – and one of the rarest too – a set that was recorded in 1958, but only ever issued on vinyl in this rare Japanese pressing from the 80s! The date's quite unique – as it features "two bones", that is, two trombonists ... CD

Sunnyside, 2014. New Copy
Tremendous work from Azar Lawrence – part of a great return to form the reedman has had in recent years – and, if anything, a run of music that's maybe even greater than his legendary sides from the 70s! Lawrence is razor-sharp throughout – spinning out bold, soulful lines on ... CD

Blue Note (Japan), 1962. New Copy
One of Stanley Turrentine's best albums ever – but a record that was recorded in 1962, yet only released by Blue Note 20 years later! The set's a great example of the sheer raw power that Stan had in his tone before it got watered down by his pop-jazz recordings of the later 60s – a ... CD

Blue Note (Japan), 1962/1984. New Copy
A sweet little quartet from Jackie McLean – a later entry into his bop-level sets for Blue Note, recorded right before his "new thing" years! The album never got a proper release back in the 60s, and only first saw the light of day two decades later – but it's a real cooker ... CD

For Sweet People From Sweet Charles
People/Universal (Japan), 1974. New Copy
A supremely fantastic album, and one that's always woefully overlooked in discussions of James Brown's incredible People label! Sweet Charles, Charles Sherell, was a great lost soul vocalist who had a voice that was warm and mellow, with a sweetness that was often missing from James' singing ... CD

Two Of Us (with bonus tracks)
Mercury/Big Break (UK), 1980. New Copy
A massive hit for the duo of Calvin Yarbrough and Alisa Peoples – and for good reason too! The set's equally well-balanced between upbeat, keyboard-heavy groovers and key mellower tracks – just the kind of rounded record we might expect from Ashford & Simpson at their late 70s best ... CD
