Anita O'Day Swings Cole Porter With Billy May (plus Anita O'Day Swings Rodgers & Hart)
CD (Item 612282) Verve (Japan), 1959/1960 — Condition: New Copy
A great double-length CD that presents 2 of Anita O'Day's Verve sessions with Billy May! Anita O'Day Swings Cole Porter is something of an addition to the Verve "songbook" mode of the 50s – but it's also one that's a lot more dynamic than the others, thanks to some very jazzy arrangements from Billy May! The groove here is very upbeat and jazzy – hard-swinging in the manner that May forged with Sinatra over at Capitol, with lots of twists and turns in the backings that really help transform the tunes! Anita's dynamic vocals really match the spirit of the arrangements – and soar out with a quality that's some of her best and boldest at Verve. Titles include "I Love You", "Get Out Of Town", "Just One Of Those Things", "Easy To Love", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", and "Love For Sale". The Rodgers & Hart album is an extremely playful set of tunes from Anita – working here with more lively Billy May arrangements that really show the best side of her sound at Verve! The tracks are all Rogers & Hart numbers – as you'd guess from the title – and Anita swings them with a bright style that also has a nice undercurrent of sadness that perfectly gets at the bittersweet qualities of Lorenzo Hart's lyrics. Titles include "I've Got Five Dollars", "Spring Is Here", "To Keep My Love Alive", "Falling In Love With Love", "I Could Write A Book", "Have You Met Miss Jones", and "Lover". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
