One of the hardest to find albums by this lost 60s soul jazz vibist – and all of his albums are pretty darn hard to find! The album's also perhaps his best – as Freddie takes a little more straight funky jazz approach, and loses some of the pop feel of his other albums. There's 2 different groups on here – one a bit large, and with Wally Richardson, Bernard Purdie, and Dud Bascomb; the other a groovy quintet with Joanne Brackeen on electric piano and Gene Walker on Varitone. The album includes a great cover of "Listen Here", plus "Stone Wall" and "Short Circuit". (Blue label pressing. Side 2 has a mark that plays with a light click on track one. Cover has a cut corner, a peeled spot on the spine, some moisture staining, a small split on the top seam, and some creasing along the opening.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Dynamite Brothers
Prestige, 1973. Very Good+
Charles Earland did the funky score for this obscure Kung Fu movie – and it's one of his best albums of the time! The lineup includes a lot of the great players that were helping him on his mid-70's stuff – Eddie Henderson, Dave Hubbard, Patrick Gleeson – and the groove is deeper ... LP, Vinyl record album
John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman
Impulse, 1963. Good Gatefold
A landmark album of vocal jazz – and one of the few sessions that John Coltrane ever cut with a singer! In a way, the album's more Hartman's than it is Coltrane's – given that Johnny's warm, mellow style of singing isn't as free and open as Trane at his most adventurous – but at ... Feels So Good
Kudu, 1975. Very Good
An incredible batch of electric funk from Grover Washington Jr – easily one of his best albums ever! The record really picks up from the sweet CTI sound of the 70s – taking Bob James arrangements with a lot of space and electric keyboards, and letting Groover blow some wonderfully ...
