5 great albums from Stanley Clarke – each packaged in tiny LP-styled sleeves! First up is Rocks Pebbles & Sand – a set to start off the 80s, but still very much in that unique blend of jazz, rock, and soul he forged so well in the 70s! The set begins with really heavy drums and bass – nicely propelled, but never too strong or too jamming – a great balance that really sets the pace well for the record as Clarke and the combo pulsate through a range of nice little numbers – often linked with a cool motorcycle sound effect! Time Exposure has a lot of 80s electro funk in the mix, particularly Clarke's impeccable bass lines, which are heavy throughout. Titles include "Play The Bass '10", "Heaven Sent You", "Speedball", "Future Shock" and the great title track. Find Out is an 80s synth funky set with a few surprising twists – including an electro/funk/old school rap cover of "Born In The USA"! Other tracks include "Find Out", "The Sky's The Limit", "Stereotypica" and "Psychedelic". Hideaway makes a move towards more delicate synth soul for Clarke – who assembles an impressive guest list that includes Stanley Jordan, Herbie Hancock and Stewart Copeland. Titles include a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed", plus "My Love, Her Inspiration", "Where Do We Go", "Old Friends" and "When It's Cold Outside". If This Bass Could Only Talk is one of the last in a legendary run of albums that Stanley Clarke cut for Columbia records in the 70s and 80s – and a set that follows his genre-shifting approach to funky jazz wonderfully! Most numbers have small groupings of players – with Gerry Brown's drums often at the core – but Clarke continues to be inventive throughout – really bringing in a range of soul and other influences to his music, while still soloing in a jazzy mode – and hitting some of those sweet 80s styles that kept his music funky!
