Black Voices (aka The Watts Prophets) — On The Street In Watts ... LP 9.99

A chilling statement from the west coast scene of the 70s – the first album from The Watts Prophets, the ultra-powerful group who emerged from the LA turmoil of the 60s. Like the Last Poets, the group blends together righteous spoken word passages and some spare rhythms and a touch of jazz – all stepping forth in the kind of message-driven recording that was too powerful for radio at the time, but which had an undeniable influence as it circulated amongst underground circles. The whole thing's summed up perfectly by the cover, which shows a fist held high in rebellion over the flag on the front, and an open hand freeing a black dove on the inside! Titles include "I'll Stop Calling You N*ggers", "Kill", "Black Pussy", and "The Meek Ain't Gonna". (Cover has a cutout hole, split top seam, some wear, and marker on front. Label has some pen.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Keep On Runnin'
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good-
The third album from Black Heat – and quite possibly the funkiest of the bunch – thanks to an even tighter sound than before, and lots of emphasis on the bottom of the groove! The group's got a few more members than before, but their sound is somehow even leaner – a really tight ... LP, Vinyl record album

Imaginations
20th Century, Mid 70s. Very Good-
An excellent group soul from Chicago – and no wonder, since The Imaginations were previously Brighter Side Of Darknes, a sublime falsetto harmony group who had a huge hit in 1972 with "Love Jones". This record's very much in the vein of that song – but also features a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joy & Pain
Capitol, 1980. Very Good+
Classic modern soul from the legendary Frankie Beverly! The record's perhaps one of their best remembered – most likely for the killer cut "Joy & Pain", which has a great hook that's been sampled many times over the years. The record also features the wonderful "Southern ... LP, Vinyl record album
