Oyate (2CD set with book)
CD (Item 595939) Nato (France), 1990 — Condition: New Copy
An ambitious project from pianist Tony Hymas – one of his most conceptual works to date, and that's saying a lot, given his other recordings! As you might guess from the image on the cover, there's a definite Native American bent to the set – as Hymas and some European jazz musicians work with a host of indigenous American artists – all in a set of tracks that extrapolate freely on themes and strands from their culture. Hymas handles most of the music, and also plays piano and keyboards – and contributions include vocals from John Trudell, DJ Nez, Joanne Shenandoah, Bonnie Jo Hunt, Floyd Red Crow Westerman, and Paul Ortega. Instrumentation varies from track to track – and includes saxes from Jim Pepper, trumpet from Stuart Brooks, guitar from Hugh Burns, percussion from Frank Ricotti, and flute from Kevin Locke. The nature of the project is less jazz, and more a variety of genres overall – and reminds us a lot of some of the best Native American consciousness raising of the 70s. 2CDs presented in a great book-like format – with 36 pages of notes and images in color. Titles include "Rapid Creek", "Crazy Horse", "Say Tey Ti", "Satanta", "Kintpauash", "Captain Jack", "Black Kettle", "Red Cloud", and "Dreamer Of Visions". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
