Live At Smalls
CD (Item 527045) Smalls Live, 2008 — Condition: New Copy
Trumpeter Ryan Kisor's got a great partner in the frontline here – alto player Sherman Irby, whose angular tones really give the record an edge! As we love in Irby's own sessions, there's a mix here of soulful and modern that's really wonderful – kind of an open flow on the horns, but this off-kilter edge, too – as if Kisor and Irby are carefully choosing never to get too sweet in their choice of notes, and doing a good job of avoiding cliches in the process. Other players include Peter Zak on piano, Carlos Henriquez on bass, and Ali Jackson on drums – and tracks are quite long and open – a really great setting for a group like this! Titles include "Con Alma", "Enigma", "Blues For Worm", and "Cool & Hot". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
