We'd never come across Orient Express before, one of the rare rock-oriented acts on the Mainsteam jazz label in the late 60s and 70s – but after a spin of this super rare hybrid of heavy psychedelic rock, HUGE percussion and electric Eastern string effects we're hooked! The group mixes heavy use of the electric sitar Danelectro started producing at the time, layering it with equally trippy turns on electric oud, melodica and minitar. It's full of heavy tribal percussive pounding, and good old fashioned hard rock – which makes for one of the trippiest arse whompins' we've had in a while! Amazing stuff, especially if you're willing to indulge a nice big dose of heavy psych rock along with your big drum breaks and beats. The Eastern vibe seems to more or less be a shtick with these guys – which would be annoying ONLY if the results weren't so hot! Tracks include "Fruit Of The Desert", "Layla", "Birds Of India", "Train To Bombay", "Caravan Of Silk", "Azaar", "Cobra Fever", "A Little Star" and more.  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Peak Impressions
Monitor, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)
One of the few straight rock records ever issued on the mostly-folk Monitor Records label – a great 60s outing from Freeborne, a group with a sound that's as tripped-out as you might expect from the cover! Instrumentation is heavy on organ and guitars, both acoustic and electric, but there's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Transformer
RCA, 1972. New Copy (reissue)
Lou Reed's fantastic early solo LP – melding the aloof, plaintive vocal performance style he perfected with the Velvets and unbelievable sharp songwriting with the vamped up, fuzzed out guitars of Mick Ronson, some symphonic touches, and the guiding spirit of Ziggy Stardust era Bowie. This ... LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1973. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)
One of the wildest records of the early 70s – and it's still pretty darn hard to argue with the power of this one – even if the meddling of the producers is nearly as legendary as the album itself! There's still such a manic energy to the original release mix – one that clearly ... LP, Vinyl record album

13 Degrees Of Reality
Now Again/Stones Throw, 2013. New Copy
If this is reality, lead us onward – as the set is a mindblowing batch of trippy psych-funk from The Heliocentrics – even more offbeat and experimental than before, in ways that make the combo the true heirs to the legacy first begun by Stark Reality! The album's definitely funky at ... LP, Vinyl record album
