Home On Richmond – Live At The Green Mill
CD (Item 602482) PJM, 2011 — Condition: New Copy
Possibly the best album so far from Chicago reedman Pat Mallinger – a cooking little live date that captures him in his home turf – the legendary Green Mill! At some level, the date's got the raw feel of a classic Chicago tenor date – but at another, thanks to Mallinger's fluid handling of a variety of reeds, there's also a more complex, more intricate approach too – a blend of both the soulful and exotic that almost reminds us of Yusef Lateef at his early best! In addition to tenor, Mallinger plays alto and soprano sax – the latter in an especially great way that embraces a post-Coltrane legacy quite strongly – especially on the title track, which is a beautiful original by Pat – the kind of tune we've really been seeking out on his albums. The rest of the group features Bill Carrothers on piano, George Fludas on drums, and Dennis Carroll on bass – and titles include "Home On Richmond", "Third Floor Richard", "Smile", "Living Space", and "Snowbound". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
