One of the best combinations of African and European modes we've heard in awhile – thanks to some great overall production and execution! Belgian singer Stef Lamil Carlens works here with Burkina Faso musicians Awa Deme and Mamadou Diabate Kibie – in this very cool blend of rootsy, bluesy sounds and more contemporary songwriting – a wicked blend that shouldn't sound nearly as great as it does! The album's a great antidote to all the cultural pilfering that's gone on over the years by Anglo musicians on the African scene – and really does feel like a true collaboration in the way that Stef's lyrics are blended with the balafon, percussion, and added vocals from Ada Deme. Titles include "Taare", "Sababu", "Tasuma/Ji", "A Sera A Waara", "Sia Slide", and "Ala Lon Man Di".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Heavy heady funk from the 70s Nigerian scene – a wicked little record that's unlike anything else we've heard before! SJOB is a combo made from ex-members of the group of Sonny Okosuns – all top-shelf players who've clearly got their chops down in the groove department, but are also ... CD

Frantically funky club from Lagos – an amazing collection of post-Fela work from the Nigerian scene, lots of it with the kind of uptempo grooves you'd expect from the "disco" in the title! Yet the sound here is hardly the type you'd find over at Studio 54 – as most cuts here ... CD

Analog Africa (Germany), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy
The title gets it perfectly right on this sweet little set – as the grooves are raw and stripped down – often just to the core elements of Afro Funk! The music may be the most hard-hitting we've ever heard from this legendary combo – and it's served up beautifully in this well-sel ... CD
