Great early Crusaders stuff, and like many of their 60s sides, filled with memorable soul jazz that would become the template for a sound that would become the face of popular jazz for decades. The songs are almost all short, hard-cracking originals, and they've all got that tight LA groove that the band virtually invented – with sharp, concise solos that ring out nicely by Wayne Henderson, Wilton Felder, and Joe Sample. 9 numbers in all including "Boopie", "Turkish Black", "Deacon Brown", "Tough Talk", "Lazy Canary", "Lonely Horn", "Brother Bernard" and "No Name Samba". (Original black label pressing. Cover has some wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

One of the few albums ever cut by reedman Rudolph Johnson – a hell of a saxophonist, and one with a great ability to combine the spiritual with the searing – a bit like Joe Farrell at his CTI best, but not as freewheeling – nicely focused, and a little bit funky in all the right ...
