CD (Item 596077) Tum (Finland), 2011 — Condition: New Copy
Incredible work from these two Finnish jazz legends – some of the most sensitive, soulful material we've heard from either player – and a perfect summation of their rich legacy in jazz! The double-length set features spare duets with Heikki Sarmanto on piano and Juhani Aaltonen on tenor – working through a host of mostly original compositions – penned with a great sense of beauty, and depth of sound that's mindblowing, given the relatively stripped-down format! The players have a tremendous feel for each other – and are especially adept at signaling sounds outside the boundaries of the set, yet never going there entirely – as they often focus more strongly on the warmer sounds they can create together. This quality makes for a great edge, one that really keeps things interesting – and almost amazes us even more when they stick inside the boundaries so often. Titles include "It Happened Today", "When I Was With You", "So Much Happened", "Evening Prayer", "Free Souls", "From Nothing", and "Evening Haze". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
