LP (Item 606532) Cadence, 1978 — Condition: New Copy

The first album ever on the Cadence Records label – and a doozy of a date that set the tone for greatness to come! Trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah takes off wonderfully here – working with a sextet that includes Vincent Chaney on french horn, Chico Freeman on tenor and flute, Muneer Abdul Fatah on cello, and Rashied Sinan on drums – all players that share his same mix of spiritual and free styles equally – which really helps them find some great space together on the long tracks in the set! Side one features the 22 minute "Happiness Is Forever" – a tune that begins with almost a modal ode to joy, then breaks into some very freewheeling passages, only to recover its path right at the end. Side two features an amazing take on "Inchworm" – one that owes a debt to Coltrane, yet clearly has its own flavor as well – plus a version of Charles Mingus' "Self Portrait In Three Colors".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
