Killer early bossa by Baden Powell – a jazzy little gem that still shines brightly after all these years! This early album is a stripped-down batch of tunes that features Baden on acoustic guitar, backed by a small percussion combo that really keeps things lively – plus some additional flute that dances beautifully along with the grooves! The tunes are at once bright and breezy, but also have a darkness that makes Baden's tunes different from some of the other bossa nova guitar work of the era – a spooky specter of deeper feelings that pushes the album past the simple space of instrumental musings. All the signs of his later greatness are firmly planted, even at this young stage – as you'll hear on the album's list of titles that include "O Astronauta", "Candomble", "Samba Do Aviao", "Sorongaio", and "Conversa De Poeta". Barclay/Polygram (Japan), 1963. Used
An early example of the genius of Baden Powell in Europe – a record that helped the bossa guitarist break out of his usual Brazilian bag, and expand his sound a bit with appreciative influences from the Parisian scene! The record still has Powell working in the style of his early work in ... CD

Vinicius E Caymmi No Zum Zum
Elenco/Polygram (Brazil), 1967. Used
An amazingly beautiful album, recorded by Vinicius De Moraes, Dorival Caymmi, Oscar Castro-Neves, and The Quarteto Em Cy for some sort of a special show. Castro-Neves provides some excellent bossa backing, the Quarteto girls sing chorus and over the top, Vinicius does some recitations, and Caymmi ... CD

Great Arrival/Bully
Atlantic/Collectables, 1966. Used
Two sparkling jazzy albums from 1966! The Great Arrival is one of Sergio Mendes' most dreamy albums, and it's an all-instrumental batch of tracks. The format is easy Brazilian piano, over larger arrangements with a good jazz component – and the record features Mendes soloing over work by ... CD

Dream
Deck Disk (Brazil), 1999. Used
Bossa versions of American jazz standards – done by Japanese singer Lisa Ono with arrangements by Oscar Castro Neves, sung in English. Whew, that's a mouthful – but the album's a nice one, and it's one of Lisa's more expensive Japanese-only recordings that have finally been released in ... CD

Seu Jorge & Almaz
Now Again, 2010. Used
Incredible music from Seu Jorge – and that's saying a lot, given how much we've loved all of his previous records! This time around, Jorge really knocks it out of the park – by stepping away from some of his tighter styles, and going for a looser, more organic approach that's totally ... CD

Remarkable modern jazz, from one of the most unique voices in the genre! Hill's piano work and compositions fall into a category of their own, working outside the limits of predominant bop sound, but not quite falling into the world of free jazz that rules the avant scene. Special Style
Streetwise/Boogie Times (France), 1985. Used
A whole new sound for The Stylistics – one that has the group working here with Maurice Starr in a sweet 80s street soul style! The approach is a surprisingly good one – and given that Starr's backings are always on the lighter side of the spectrum, the group's trademark harmonies are ... CD
