Blue Notes — Truth Has Come To Light ... CD 13.99

A strange but great chapter of The Blue Notes – working here without Harold Melvin or Teddy Pendergrass, but still sounding pretty great on their own! This version of The Blue Notes is a male quartet – not the Melvin group with Sharon Paige who were recording for ABC – and they get some fresh help in the studio from George Perry, who brings in this soaring groove that still echoes earlier Philly work, but also has a bit more of a clubby vibe overall! The style's never disco, but makes for some great uptempo soul – the sort that really lets the group's wonderful vocal style soar strongly – a rich blend that's totally great even without Teddy, and which has a great mix of raspy leads and warm harmonies. Titles include the wicked jazzy dancer "The Girl Makes Me Wanna Sing" – plus "It's Over", "Memories", "Standing By You Girl", "People Are Running Around", and "The Truth Has Come To Light". Flying Start
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
Not the band's first album – as you might think from the "start" in the title – but a classic batch of jazzy, funky, and soulful grooves from The Blackbyrds – one of those combos that few groups could match back in the 70s! The set's got a beautifully put-together feel ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brass Construction
United Artists, 1975. Very Good
A classic set that goes "slam" from the very first note – and which helped to set the pace for countless ensemble funk acts to come! Brass Construction had a wonderful sound that was the best-realized version of the east coast indie club combos of the mid 70s – funky at the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1975. Good+
An essential bit of jazz funk from Donald Byrd and Larry Mizell! The groove's very similar to their classic Places & Spaces LP, and the record's got loads of cool spacey tracks with hot funky trumpet from Donald, and cool waves of synth and sound from Larry. The title cut's a great groover, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Coup De Graas
Mercury, Late 50s. Very Good+
One of the weird LPs that French Horn player John Graas made in the 50's, featuring that cumbersome instrument in a set of surprisingly light and loose jazz tracks. Graas' playing on the French Horn is a bit like Gerry Mulligan's on the baritone – that is, he takes these turns and twists ... LP, Vinyl record album
