While it's tough to think of a jazz player having "hits" – given the low sales of jazz albums, even in the 60s – it's still the case that Ammons' sound was so strong, and so soulful, he had plenty of fans in the crossover market for some of his bigger recordings. The album does a good job of bringing some of those soul jazz gems together – mostly tracks from his early 60s, pre-incarceration years at Prestige, but a few later cuts that get a bit funky. Titles include "Jungle Strut", "Seed Shack", "Exactly Like You", "Didn't We", "Angel Eyes", "Ca'Purange", and "Canadian Sunset". (Cover has some wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Prestige, Mid 50s. Very Good
Ahhhh . . . The Jam Session years of Gene Ammons! This album was one of a number that Jug cut for Prestige during the mid 50s, all excellent examples of how perfectly the label's "blowing session" style could work when it wanted to. The set takes Ammons' tenor, and groups it with an ... LP, Vinyl record album
Late Hour Special
Prestige, 1964. Very Good
Very nice album by Jug that often gets overlooked because it's comprised of 2 different sessions, and can't get the "historical" writeup of being a single significant moment in the studio. Some tracks – including "Lascivious" and "Soft Winds" – are with a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Gene
Prestige, Late 50s. Sealed
Way more than just an album with Gene Ammons as a leader – and instead, a set that truly earns the "all stars" listed on the cover – thanks to a great array of supporting players, and a very loose, open-ended jam session style that lets everyone get in plenty of solo space! ... Prestige/Swingville, Early 60s. Very Good+
Joe blows it strong and mellow – in this spare swinging group that includes Frank Wess on tenor, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eddie Jones on bass, and Oliver Jackson on drums. Tracks are warm and unpressured, more in a Verve mode than a Prestige one – and titles include "Wednesday's ... LP, Vinyl record album
