Searching For A Joyride – Previously Unreleased New Orleans Funk Rock 1980

CD (Item 385083) Night Train/Tuff City, 1980 — Condition: New Copy

A near-lost chapter from the post-Meters career of bassist George Porter – and some surprisingly nice funky work cut by his Joy Ride group! Porter's really stretching out here in his years past The Meters' last Warner Brothers recordings – bringing in a more open style of rhythm, and stretching out in some more complicated song structures. And although the title and the notes of the set imply that the groove here is relatively rock-based, it's not – and is more just in the style of funk at the end of the 70s, as influences from the larger club-based ensembles and P-Funk spinoffs were changing the overall sound of the groove. There's not that much of a Meters sound to the set, but the music is still plenty darn nice – especially the more upbeat tracks that stretch out in a clubbier approach to funk, of the sort that allows for lots of bass and guitar interplay. Titles include "Always Dreaming", "Sam's Dream", "Happy Song", "Can You See Me Now", "Everbody's Searching", "The Sound Doctor", "Money Money", and "Got To Find A Way".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
