A great little box set of Syl Johnson sides from Numero's epic, jaw-droppingly far-reaching Complete Mythology package! The purpose here was not only put together a beautiful, more portable vinyl sampler of the amazing 6LP/4CD complete set, they also did it to represent the breadth of Syl's soul genius and mastery of a range of styles over years. Honestly, we can't imagine how difficult it must have been to pick standout tracks to feature here, but however many blood-vessels in the brain they must have busted to choose the best, it delivers perfectly. Packaged in a white box that's sealed with custom Syl Johnson craft tape! "Do You Know What Love Is" b/w "The Love I Found in You", "My Funky Band" b/w "Sockin’ Soul Power", "Double Whammy" b/w "Wiggle In Your Hips", "Right On" b/w "Pt. 2", "Try My Love Again" b/w "All I Need Is Someone Like You". (limited edition 5 X 45s box set.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Numero, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)
The title's a reference to a once-famous ad campaign, but the groove is pure funky soul all the way through – from the sweet break that starts the single, to the soaring lead vocals that really make the whole thing wonderful! The tune may well be one of the best 45s we've ever heard reissued ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

I Can Remember/Standing On The Outside
Numero, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)
The bump here is a gentle one – a cool slow funk start to a track that turns out to be just the kind of mellow harmony number we love so much! The flipside's equally great – and both cuts have a feel that reminds us of those east coast groups who could be hard and sweet at the same ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Some "Strange Happenings" indeed – a tune that begins with a spooky, echoey sound, then rolls into a wickedly funky groove! The tune really takes its time to build – strong and instrumental at the start, then with these deep Temps-like vocals that come into the mix and really ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3x7inch
Messed up funky soul from the Chicago scene – a beautiful package of rare singles from Little Ed & The Soundmasters! The style here is a bit hard to describe – as Ed and crew were schooled in blues, but brought up during the 60s soul underground – and clearly managed to pick ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Arizona funk from George Bowman and his Memphis Soul – recorded at Phoenix's Audio Recorders studio in the late 60s – completely unreleased until now by Numero! "Don't Down Me People" is purely funky on a couple levels, most notably via the JB-schooled vocals by ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Wait For Me/Just Fun
Numero, Late 60s. New Copy
The Brown Bombers come on here with plenty of firepower – soaring with the groove on "Wait For Me" – which has an upbeat Northern soul groove and some great harmonies to match! "Just Fun" follows in a similar spirit – an instrumental groove that echoes the ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

We've never heard Jackie Shane before, but he's a hell of a great singer here – one with an almost gospelly sort of exclamation – served up over a Hammond-heavy groove with a very secular vibe! A young Luther Ingram sings "Oh Baby Don't You Weep" – another tune with its ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Staatsakt (Germany), Late 70s. New Copy (pic cover)
An offbeat groove from the enigmatic Babyman – with a sound that's as weird as the image on the sleeve! The vocals are spoken, maybe almost rhymed – but set to this great mellow funk groove with a tripping 70s feel – funky, but laidback, and with these great "Summer ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

RCA/Outta Sight (UK), Late 60s. New Copy
A killer cut by The Metros – one of Detroit soul's best secrets in the 60s! The track is amazing – dipping, turning, and soaring with this groove that even knocks out most Motown classics – and it's backed here by an equally great number, making for one hell of a 45! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Memphis soul legend Percy Wiggins joins the Bo-Keys – who help him cut one of his greatest records in years! A sweet soulful stepper from Paul Johnson – a cut that feels like it was lifted right from lost 70s tapes from the LA scene – right down to its jazzy, Steely Dan-styled hook! A wonderful lost tune from the great Chuck Jackson – served up here with a darkly stepping groove that's somewhere in the best Drifters territory from the early 60s – but topped with Chuck's great iceman vocals! Maxine Brown belts it out on "Torture" – a tune that's ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
