Matata — Feelin' Funky ... CD 8.99

Hard funky soul with an Afrobeat backbone from Matata – who arrived on the London scene (via Kenya) in the mid 70s! Matata leaned mightily on the JBs for their groove, and laid out a heavy, rock solid variation on JBs funk with an African percussion base of congas and bongos at the core! The horns take a more Afrobeat tack, too, with punchy blasts and solos peppering the numbers – in a really nice way – quite tight, but loose enough to swing, too. Tracks include "I Wanna Do My Thing", "Return To You", "Getting Together", "I Believed Her", "I Don't Have To Worry", "I Want You", "Love Is The Only Way", "Gimme Some Lovin" and more.  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Motema, 2014. New Copy
The first solo effort from Awa Sangho – a Mali-born, Abdijan-bred singer who's worked previously with other bigger names in African music – and with a few groups as well – but an artist who's definitely got the maturity to make it all on her own! The work has a very special ... CD

We've really liked Somi's previous records, but here she's somehow even better than before – more soulful, jazzier, and with this sort of universal appeal that has his loving the record from the very first note! Somi's vocals slide perfectly alongside some relatively spare, jazzy backings ... CD

Try & Love
Academy, 1973. New Copy
A blistering set of Afro-Funk from the 70s – the debut of Ofege, a band of high school students at the time! There's a really trippy sound to the set, as the guitars figure strongly in the groove, and are often recorded with some slightly psychedelic touches – similar to Blo or some of ... CD

Gordy/Big Break (UK), 1977. New Copy
Maybe the best album ever from this late 70s Motown group – a set that's got the girls really stepping out with a nice degree of power – in a groove that's different than the usual female disco mode of the time! The record's got a much more fully-formed sort of feel – not just a ... CD

A seminal bit of seventies soul from Switch, and a record that really helped set the tone for countless others to come in the 80s – no surprise, given that the group's got members from both the DeBarge and Ingram families! There's a warmth here that few others can match – an earnest, ... CD

Not Belgian music – despite what you might think from the title – but an assortment of great American soul and pop from the early 60s – all of which have a very sweet-stepping groove! The style here is the mode that's always been a favorite of Belgian soul fans – who dig a ... CD

Two albums and bonus tracks too – all rare material from an overlooked chapter of The Shirelles' career! First up is Happy & In Love, a great second chapter for The Shirelles – hardly the girl group pop they cut in the 60s, and instead a more righteous soul style for the 70s – ... CD

An early classic from LaBelle – wonderful vocals mixed with both heavy funk and laidback spacey soul touches! The group had really hit their stride by this point – as the trio of Nona Hendryx/Sarah Dash/Patti Labelle push way past their girl group roots – and even some of the ... CD

Croydon Municipal (UK), Early 60s. New Copy
An excellent collection of female groovers from the early 60s – one that mixes together rare soul, pop, and vocal numbers from a variety of obscure singles – definitely not the kind of stuff that was hitting the charts at the time! Most numbers have a "popcorn" kind of groove ... CD
