Mask Man & The Agents — One Eye Open (plus bonus tracks) ... CD 11.99

An excellent bit of party funk – and a real precursor to musical party records of the 70s! Harmon Bethea is the "Mask Man", and he's working here with his Agents – a very popular live act at the time, with a mixture of raunchy grooves and blue humor, ala Doug Clark & The Hot Nuts, but perhaps a bit cleaner. The classic track on this one is "One Eye Open", which has a nice drum part and a great groove – but the whole album's a great set of hard soul numbers that take off in kind of an indie Sam & Dave funky kind of way. Titles include "Love Bandito", "Roaches", "It's The Thing", "In a Crowded Station", and "Wigs". (Original pressing! Vinyl is great – cover has wear in one corner, and a bit of tape around the edges – but very clear tape.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

From A Whisper To A Scream
Kudu, 1971. Very Good
One of our favorite-ever albums from Esther Phillips – an album that really helped her transform her sound for the 70s! Gordy, 1972. Very Good- Gatefold
A masterful album of righteous trippy soul – recorded during the height of the Temptations' strong association with Norman Whitfield! The record has more than a few political/social conscience songs – like "Take A Look Around", "Stop The War Now", and "Superstar ... LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1974. Very Good
Hard funky soul from The New Birth – still sounding pretty raw at this point, and with that funky group ensemble feel that you'll hear on their best early albums! The tracks have plenty of nice guitar and clavinet work, and a shifting lead vocal approach that's pretty great on most cuts ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Kendricks
Tamla, 1973. Near Mint-
A classic LP that forever transformed the sound of dancefloor soul! Eddie scored big big big with the hit "Keep On Truckin", which was a huge huge stormer back in the day, and which still grooves hard today – with it's midtempo boogie mode of grooving. Eddie's great on the mellow ... LP, Vinyl record album

Funky disco grooves from the team of Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael – and one of the best-remembered projects from the P&P club years! Back On The Right Track
Warner, 1979. Very Good+
Sly Stone's definitely back on the right track here – returning to the heights of his earlier powers in this late 70s comeback album for Warner Brothers! The record's got a lot of touches of the old Sly funky sound, but it's done in a slightly tighter style too – a bit more polish than ... LP, Vinyl record album

Unique Thelonious Monk
Riverside, 1956. Very Good
The session's billed as "very personal treatments of great standards" – and it's a great twist on familiar material, all given the Thelonius touch! There's less of Monk's creative composition and angular group arrangements going on here – and instead, the album's almost a ... LP, Vinyl record album
