Olay OK
CD (Item 539052) Everest/Essential, Early 60s — Condition: New Copy
A great record from this overlooked singer – one that mixes Ruth's naturally strong vocals with some sweet lean 60s arrangements! Olay's got a range that's pretty amazing – a way of dipping from low to high pretty quickly, really wrapping up a song with her energy over the lyrics – an approach that, a decade before, might have come across as too soppy or flowery – but which here works perfectly, thanks to a nice balance in the backings! Some tunes focus strongly on the rhythms, which adds a great punch – but even the more string-heavy numbers come off mighty nice too – and titles include "How Did He Look", "I Concentrate On You", "Scarlet Bird In The Yellow Tree", "All By Myself", and "The Wind & The Sea".
