The Monophonics definitely have a way of getting inside your brain – using a cosmic slop of fuzzy guitars and funky basslines to eat away your grey matter more than a maggot inside your cranium! Yet even past that heavy Funkadelic reference, they've also got a richer vibe too – elements of 60s psych mixed in with their funk – particularly in the way that the younger generation's been re-digging crates from the early 70s these days – especially some of the more farther-flung tracks from the global underground. There's slight Afro elements at times, garagey bits at others, and even some well-timed rhythms that help the whole thing have a good sense of focus – and save it from the overindulgence that toppled the hippie generation before they even got started. Titles include "Mirage", "Bang Bang", "Temptation", "In Your Brain", "Sure Is Funky", "There's A Riot Going On", "Say You Love Me", "They Don't Understand", and "Thinking Black".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Soul In The Hole
Ubiquity, 2009. New Copy
The most deeply soulful record we've ever heard from Shawn Lee – a massive tribute to the soul sounds of the 60s and 70s, served up with help from a host of hip singers who include Darondo, Nicole Willis, Karime Kendra, and Fanny Franklin! Lee's grooves are as funky as ever, but the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Truth & Soul, 2014. New Copy
An amazing chapter in the career of Lee Fields – an artist who's been moving our souls for decades, but who just keeps on growing in these really great ways! Unlike the fragile style of My World, or the heady southern soul of Faithful Man, Emma Jean's got this very different vibe – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Andre Solomko is an artist who was born a few decades late – the kind of talent who would have been right at home in the CTI scene of the 70s – where he no doubt would have risen to great fame for his music! Yet we're also more than happy to have him working strong here in the 21st ... LP, Vinyl record album

Problems
Soul Fire/Truth & Soul, 2002. New Copy (reissue)
Tight!! Lee Fields, one of the great criminally under appreciated funky geniuses of the 70s is back with another pounding, raw funk classic that still finds the man at the peak of his powers, decades after he first made mark on the funk landscape! This is Lee's first full length effort for Soul ... LP, Vinyl record album

Truth & Soul, 2012. New Copy
Smoking soul from the mighty Lee Fields – and a set that really has him getting back to his roots, as well! The record's billed as a follow-up to the previous My World – but it's got a style that's much more deep soul, much more southern-tinged than that great record – a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hips Shaking
Favorite (France), 2014. New Copy
The coolest work we've heard so far from this Patchworks side project – a record that fuses together equal parts 70s jazz, funk, and soul – with just the right smattering of global influences as well! There's a tightness to the set that we really love – careful instrumentation ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tracks from the great Tony Allen – but completely remade here with a complicated set of rhythms and very tripped-out style of production! Doctor L features very heavily on the record (which also has contributions from Thiago Franca and Mps Pilot) – and the whole thing reminds us a lot ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kalabuley Woman
Hot Casa (France), 1977. New Copy (reissue)
The album's only got two long tracks – but both of them are more than enough to make it great! "Kalabuley Woman" takes up all of side one – and the tune's got this wickedly dubby approach to funk – almost like Cymande at the start, but then filled up with all these ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buda/L'Arome (France), 1970s. New Copy
Amazing 70s recordings from Ethiopian singer Alemayehu Eshete – one of the greatest stars of the Ethiopiques series next to Mulatu! The style here is often quite funky at times – a strong James Brown influence in some of the rhythms, hitting hard with a heavy funk groove at the bottom, ... LP, Vinyl record album
