Abdullah/Brown/Bang/Sirone/Hopkins/Cyrille — Group – Live ... CD 18.99

Vintage work from this overlooked group from the New York scene of the 80s – an all-star lineup that features Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, Marion Brown on alto sax, Billy Bang on violin, Sirone and Fred Hopkins on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums! The tracks are long, and there's a loose, open feel that recalls the loft jazz generation – but an overall sound that shows the new strength and focus that some of these players were really hitting at the time – that sharper vision that you'd get during the early years of Black Saint/Soul Note – yet presented here in a style that's much more spontaneous overall! Brown and Bang are especially nice – some of the sharpest corners of this sextet – and titles include a great reading of "Goodbye Porkpie Hate", plus "Joann's Green Satin Dress" and "Amanpondo".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

The set's got a really beautiful sound – one that comes from the ringing guitar tones of Garrison Fewell, and the twin reeds of John Tchicai and Charlie Kohlhase – each of whom plays in a different channel of the recording! This approach gives the record a great sense of space from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Nothing needs correction here – as the set's one of the most compelling settings we've heard for reedman Mats Gustafsson in a while – a record that really bubbles over with a wonderful sense of energy and musicality, and which shows a really fresh side of Gustafsson's talents! A classic set of soul jazz from Chicago – a rare indie date recorded in the early 80s, but with a tight and swinging feel that's more 70s jazz funk than you might think! Corky's on Yamaha keyboards, and he's backed by a hip group of Chicago players that includes Curtis Prince on drums, Artee ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe McPhee's first record – the start of an amazing legacy in jazz, even if the original pressing was only issued in a small number of copies! Even at this early stage, Joe's showing a strong musical vision – working in a style that moves off the New York avant scene of the 60s, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most soulful Sun Ra albums ever – very much on the Lanquidity tip, and done with a great mix of electric and acoustic instrumentation! The vibe here is really mellow, spiritual, and warm – and the album actually feels a lot more like a session recorded for the Strata East ... LP, Vinyl record album
