A classic set of early jazz recordings by Nina Simone – one of her first albums ever, but already with an approach that's quite different from other singers of the time! Nina's singing a fair bit of standards here, but she brings a deeply personal approach to the material – inflecting the tunes with gospel-inspired soul, and showing some very slight folksy touches – of the sort that would come in more heavily on later records. Backing is by a small combo, and tracks include "Plain Gold Ring", "Good Bait", "He Needs Me", "Don't Smoke In Bed", and "I Loves You Porgy".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

An obscure 70s gem from Aldemaro Romero and his Onda Nueva – very much in the mode of his best 60s work, but with a warmer, smoother 70s sort of feel! Amazing is right – as the album features Nina caught at a great early point in her career, delivering a mix of ballads and folkish tunes – all with the kind of emotion that has kept us listening to her over the years. The approach is simple, but legendary, and filled with righteous ... LP, Vinyl record album

Beautiful early work from British singer Vashti Bunyan – an important figure in the acid folk scene at the end of the 60s, heard here on some really wonderful work from a few years before!
