Fantastic grooves from French sound library genius Paul Piot – one of the lesser-known names on the European scene of the late 60s, but surely one you'll look for in the future, after hearing the great cuts on this sweet little set! The package is a real treasure through and through – put together with an unassuming cover that might make you accidentally pass the record over in the racks – but filled with deeply complicated orchestrations that rival, if not better, the best funky soundtrack moments you'd get from bigger French composers of the period – like Michel Legrand or Francois De Roubaix! Piot's music is a bit different than both of those cats, but not that far away, either – given his use of romping rhythms that create a mod style of funk – and the changing instrumentation that might feature a horn part one minute, a floating piano bit the next – as well as some occasional Legrand-like vocal chorus bits we especially love on a few tracks.
