A beautiful set of tributes to the legendary Albert Ayler – presented here in a series of improvisations from different assemblages of players – some solo, some duo, and some in larger groups – all working together in a legacy of sound that really takes off from the amazing tones and textures that Ayler first forged in the 60s! The range of musicians is as exciting as the music itself – and the performances feature reeds from Joe McPhee, Evan Parker, Urs Leimgruber, Raphael Imbert, John Tchicai, and Michel Portal – plus trumpet from Jean-Luc Cappozzo, bass from Joelle Leandre, Jean Jacques Avenel, and Barre Phillips, drums from Simon Goubert and Christian Rollet – and a mixture of sung and spoken passages from Lucia Recio, Steve Dalachinsky, and Jacqueline Caux.  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

A beautiful combination of flute and bass – the former from Nicole Mitchell, the latter from Joelle Leandre – both players who really open up in the space of a spare record like this! Leandre's got a very lyrical, spiritual tone to her instrument – but also lots of sharp edges ... CD

Mack Avenue, 2014. New Copy
Trumpeter Sean Jones's best album yet for Mack Avenue – a quartet set that finds him taking a conscious step into a more spontaneous style – and it works incredibly well! It's not that Jones has suddenly left his classic hard bop influences behind for a raw, free jazz aesthetic. There' ... CD

A massive hit for the duo of Calvin Yarbrough and Alisa Peoples – and for good reason too! The set's equally well-balanced between upbeat, keyboard-heavy groovers and key mellower tracks – just the kind of rounded record we might expect from Ashford & Simpson at their late 70s best ... CD
