One of the coolest, grooviest cats who ever cut a record – an an artist with a really unique conception at the time of these recordings! Roy Porter got his start as a drummer during the bebop years, and worked hard on the LA scene of the R&B and soul scenes of the 50s and 60s – but to us, his crowning achievement is these amazing funk sides of the early 70s – amazingly complex, but right on the money too – and a whole new kind of music that's impossible to describe in words! Roy mixes funky drums with lots of cool jazzy changes – keyboard lines, horn parts, and bass bits that have the frenzy you might find in fusion, yet come across with the down-to-earth vibe of a funky 45 – a killer blend that goes way past jazz, and even most straight funk too – as you'll hear in this sweet little set. The package brings together all the best tracks from these key Porter years – and titles include "Jessica" and "Panama" in both vocal and instrumental versions, plus "Wow", "Funny Feelin", "Funky Twitch", "Love You", "Hense Forth", "Out On The Town Tonight", "Givin Me The Blues", "Waver-ing", "Party Time", and "Hip City".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Generation
Vistone/Tramp (Germany), 1994. New Copy
The last album ever recorded by funky drummer Roy Porter – and a really unique set that seeks to combine his older grooves from the 70s with contemporary elements from the 90s hip hp scene! One of the most amazing albums ever cut by reedman Herb Geller – a really unique overseas session from the 70s, and quite different than his initial recordings of the 50s! Jazztime, 1961. New Copy (reissue)
The only full album ever issued by tenor player Rocky Boyd – but a set so great, it's definitely made a name for him over the years! Boyd's got a wonderful tone on the set – sharp and soulful, with an approach to the tenor that almost reminds us of early 60s Jackie McLean – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tommy Turrentine
Time, 1959. New Copy (reissue)
One of the most fantastic hardbop albums of all time! Tommy Turrentine was the less-famous trumpet-playing brother of Stanley Turrentine – but he was a hell of a player in his early days, and he cut some amazing records with his brother during the younger years of his career. New Jazz/Prestige, 1961. New Copy (reissue)
One of the few albums ever cut by this incredible tenor sax player – a wonderful talent that we only know from a handful of records – all of which we love! Saturn, Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)
One of the greatest Saturn albums! This one has Ra playing clavioline and echoey "cosmic side drums" with a great spacey sound that was probably arrived at through some primitive reverb and echo techniques! The overall effect is everything you'd imagined about Sun Ra – a mixture ... LP, Vinyl record album

Saturn, Mid 50s/1967. New Copy (reissue)
A killer early session from Sun Ra! Ra plays organ and electric piano, and the band includes Gilmore, Pat Patrick, Marshall Allen, Ronnie Boykins, Art Hoyle, Phil Cohran, and Julian Priester. The group's also got an electric bass, which gives the tracks a nice bottom, and a good spooky feel. ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the more obscure albums by Ra – but a great one, and a record that features a number of tracks recorded in the same marathon session that also yielded the albums Fate In a Pleasant Mood, Angels And Demons At Play, and We Travel The Spaceways. Prestige, 1958. New Copy (reissue)
One of the few 50s albums as a leader from reedman Jerome Richardson – a hell of a player who made so many other folks' records sound great! A masterpiece of funky soul – and one of the greatest albums of the early 70s! Subtitled "Live At the Apollo Vol 3", but waaay better than any of the earlier volumes, this monster 2LP live set has James and the JB's wailing away in a freewheeling live set of hard hard hard funky grooves.
