CD (Item 538233) Concord, 1980/1981 — Condition: New Copy

Two wonderful Concord albums from Cal Tjader – packaged here in a single set! Gozame Pero Ya is a great bit of Latin from Cal Tjader – recorded during his early years on Concord, but with all the best touches of his 70s work for Fantasy! The group features some tight piano from Mark Levine – who also plays Fender Rhodes – an electric touch that always sounds great with Cal's vibes – and Roger Glenn's flute is also part of the group, giving things a sweet soulful undercurrent. There's added percussion from Poncho Sanchez, and guitar from Mundell Lowe – and titles include "Shoshana", "This Couldn't Be The Real Thing", "Close Enough For Love", and "This Is Always". Shining Sea is a late date for Cal, but a great one too – the kind of a session that shows that his fire was never dampened after years of different albums in different settings – and that his sound was always wonderfully suited to a small group set! The album's got an easy-going grace that might be overlooked at first – no tricks, no gimmicks, and no electricity – but Cal's a hell of a leader with a wonderful vision, bringing in a nice mix of jazz and easy influences to a group that includes Hank Jones on piano and Scott Hamilton on tenor. The tunes are all Johnny Mandel compositions, and titles include "Quietly There", "Emily", "Unless It's You", "Time For Love", "The Shining Sea", and "Song From MASH".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
