Amazing flute work from the legendary Fajardo – a player who was right up there with Pacheco in his pre-percussion years! The set's got a great sharp edge right from the start – a quality that might well come from the production, but which definitely keeps things from ever sounding too sweet at all – really focusing in on those quick bursts and twists of sound that come from the lead flute lines. Grooves are often nicely staccato – almost a more percussive take on the pachanga generation, given the way the timbales ring out strongly – and titles include "Penicilina", "Una Rosa De Francia", "Una Taza De Arroz", "Liceo Del Pilar", "Meditacion", and "Amalia Batista".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

A lost little album from Latin flute legend Fajardo – and easily one of his grooviest records ever! Fajardo's probably best known for his charanga recordings of the early 60s – but this smoking set has the reedman stepping out wonderfully on a host of Latin Soul tunes to rival the best ... CD

Great Cuban grooves, with some heavy trumpet in the lead – as you'd guess from the sparkling cover of this vintage album! The set's got a nice raw feel throughout – and the strong use of lead trumpet almost gives some of the cuts the feel of Dizzy Gillespie's cubop experiments from the ... CD

Classic Cuban jazz material from the group of trumpeter Rolando Aquilo – done in a style that's a bit tighter than some of the other Jam Session albums from the time, but still plenty darn great! Rolando's trumpet is firmly in the lead on most tracks, but the overall presentation is still ... CD

Acid Symposium, 1972. New Copy
An insanely wonderful bit of Latin funk! The groove is super heavy, and falls somewhere in between NuYorican soul and Chicano Power rock – with a sound that's pretty close to Black Sugar, but a little bit more psychedelic, due to the heavy guitars and keyboards in the grooves. Hard congas ... CD

A real treasure – and the best album in years from Latin percussion maestro Jack "Mr Bongo" Costanzo! Jack's moved past the bongo rhythms that he was famous for in the 50s and 60s, and is working here as the lead congolero in a tight group that features some bright young west coast ... CD
