Bully!

LP (Item 8574) Atlantic, 1966 — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

4.50 5

The only Atlantic Records session from the Quartette Tres Bien – and a set that's got a bit more punch than some of their records for Decca! The groove here still features the compelling percussion/piano lineup of the combo – with Percy James on bongo and conga, Albert St James on drums, and Jeter Thompson on piano – and the playing has a strong focus on the piano work by Thompson, with a good mix of soul jazz and lyrical styles! Includes the original track "Bully", plus versions of "Work Song", "Caravan", "Three O'Clock In The Morning", and "I Never Knew". (White label promo. Cover is in decent shape.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Here It Is!
Decca, Mid 60s. Very Good+
The Quartette Tres Bien had a trademark piano/percussion/bass/conga sound that grooved nicely on their own material, and on their mellow covers of 60s pop and jazz standards. This nice mid-period Decca album by the group features some nice originals – like "Jamsine Eyes", "Trac ... LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1966. Very Good
A heck of a great little record – one that shouldn't work so well, but it does! For the set, Sonny Stitt's blowing in front of a larger brass section – and while the prospect of a Sonny Stitt big band record might not sound that great at first, this one really kicks, largely because of ... Swiss Movement
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+
The extremely successful union of two of Atlantic's biggest funky jazz stars, caught live in Switzerland, with the amazing Benny Bailey sitting in on trumpet. The tracks are long and funky, and are virtually a blueprint for pop soul jazz playing of the time – mixing slinky rhythms with some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Giuffre 3
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good+
Groundbreaking trio work from the great Jimmy Giuffre – an album that cut loose both the piano and the drums – in a way that took Gerry Mulligan's earlier rhythm-less experiments with jazz, and pushed them one degree further! The group on the session features Giuffre on clarinet, tenor ... LP, Vinyl record album

African Cookbook
Atlantic, Mid 60s/1972. Very Good
A killer album of African-tinged jazz – recorded privately by Randy Weston in the mid 60s, and not issued formally until 1972 by Atlantic Records! The session shows Weston at the height of his modernist experiments – and at a time when his work was going largely undocumented, probably ... LP, Vinyl record album

A groundbreaking set from Yusef Lateef – one that mixes together a number of different soul jazz styles! In a way, Atlantic records tried to handle Yusef Lateef in the same way they did Roland Kirk – by creating recordings that either let him express himself strongly as an arch-modernis ... A great album of bossa groovers, recorded by Herbie in the early days of the US bossa boom – and with a sound that's right on the money! The backing's very lively, and the tracks have a tight bossa sound that's quite authentic. Herbie's flute is livelier than usual, and on a set like this, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bigger & Better
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good+
One of the best David Newman albums for Atlantic from the 60s – and one that breaks past the R&B-influenced formula of earlier albums! This one features some great arrangements by William Fischer, the cool wild-card arranger who was to late 60s Atlantic what David Axelrod was to Capitol ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pianist Jack Wilson is one of our favorite underdiscovered talents of the 60's – and we treasure all of the albums we can find by him. A great little record, filled with loads of cross-cultural influences that make for one of the most exotic Herbie Mann albums of the 60s! The group's billed as the Afro-Jazz Sextet– but has a strong Latin vibe as well – a bit of an echo of the experiments Herbie Mann did with Latin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Big Band Bossa Nova
Mercury, Mid 60s. Good+
Perhaps THE greatest Quincy Jones album of the 60s – a hard-swinging batch of big band bossa tunes – and one of the greatest American takes on the bossa sound ever! Quincy really brings a lot of soul to the set – syncopating the bottom end of the tunes to really bring out the ... LP, Vinyl record album
