Funky funky female soul! Marva Whitney was one of the greatest singers in the James Brown stable of stars during the late 60s – and she sang with a hard raw style worth of The Godfather himself! Brother James produced and wrote a good part of this classic album – and the record is one of the greatest JB albums of all time! Nearly every cut's a winner – like the sample classic "Unwind Yourself", which has a crazy corkscrew sax line, or the massive two-part remake of the Isley's "It's Your Thing" (titled "It's My Thing"), or the slowly funky "Get Out Of My Life", or the massive duet with Bobby Byrd "You Got To Have A Job", or the classic instrumental "In The Middle". It's all great – and the album's one of the best funk records you could buy!  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

King, 1970. New Copy (reissue)
Amazing female funk! Years after James Brown first rocked the Apollo Theater with his own live recordings, he returned to the Harlem showplace with the sock-soul diva Marva Whitney – one of his greatest singers ever! This album's a monster all the way through – hard and heavy funk, of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mind Of Gil Scott-Heron
Arista, 1978. New Copy (reissue)
A great little live album – one that's quite different than Gil Scott-Heron's double-length set for Arista – and a set that serves as a key bridge between his early protest work and his emerging vocal sensibility! The set features a fair bit of longer spoken passages – but unlike ... LP, Vinyl record album

Executive Suite 1
Polydor, 1974. New Copy (reissue)
A gem of a full-length set from Executive Suite – a Philly quartet who are probably best known for their singles in the 70s, but who really find a great way to open up here in the course of an expanded album! Some of the tracks are nice and long – done in a two-part style that really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Party Down
Cat, 1974. New Copy (reissue)
A funky classic from Little Beaver – one of the best albums to come out of the Miami scene of the mid 70s! Little Beaver lays down some righteous guitar and heavy vocals over a cool spare backing groove on this one. It's a party, alright, but it's got the feel of the smoldering, latenight ... King/Sundazed, 1958. New Copy (reissue)
An incredible late 50s set for King by singer Lula Reed – and a pretty unique blend of R&B and bluer and moodier material – but a lot more upbeat than you'd expect from the title! Lula's voice is a genuine vessel for the bluesy material, but it's also light and lovely, and works ... LP, Vinyl record album

King, 1970. New Copy (reissue)
Further genius from James Brown at the start of the 70s – a record that's starting to show some of the more open-ended grooves he'd explore with the JBs on their own albums – longer, stretched-out tracks that are way more than simple funk and soul! There's a sense of freewheeling ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tramp (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold
Funky sax genius from Professor Earl Lett – a cool combo player who cut some great funky 45s at the end of the 60s and start of the 70s! The cuts here are a mix of instrumental and vocal numbers – but even the latter have plenty of reed work from Earl, blown with a sharp-edged and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Westbound/4 Men With Beards, 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)
An insane classic from one of the wildest funk bands ever! According to reports, George Clinton and the band cut this set in a marathon 48-hour stretch in the studio – working like mad all night and day long, after dropping a motherlode of some mighty fine acid! We don't know if that story's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Westbound/4 Men With Beards, 1970. New Copy (reissue)
One of the darkest records to ever come out of the Detroit soul scene! As you might guess from the title, the album is Funkadelic's first – and it's a swirling mass of psychedelic guitars, echoey drums, and bass-heavy riffing, all topped off by the band's harmony vocals, which sound like a ... Stax/4 Men With Beards, 1973. New Copy (reissue)
The one-time obscure, now straight-up classic funky soul record by 24-Carat Black! This beautiful LP was released by Stax in the early 70s, but somehow got lost in the shuffle. Fortunately, it was rediscovered by the international groove community in the years to come, and it's been at the top of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Satisfaction
Family Groove, 1984. New Copy
A previously-unreleased album from Aurra – laid down in the studio after the group's famous run for Salsoul Records – and with a groove that's even leaner and meaner than before! Mainmain Steve Washington is still at the helm of the group – but vocals are handled by Mark Stevens ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cream/Fat Possum, 1972. New Copy (reissue)
An unusual session recorded by Swamp Dogg for Hi Records at the start of the 70s – a bit more polished and less full-on nasty than some of the usual Dogg grooves from the 70s, but still with plenty of that heavy Jerry Williams groove at the bottom! The album's got a nice tightness that we ... LP, Vinyl record album
