A really sweet little album from guitarist Kenny Burrell – one in which he takes older tunes ("a generation ago"), and updates them with a sweetly compressed Verve 60s groove ("today"!) The record features 2 small groups – one with Ron Carter, Grady Tate, and Phil Woods; the other with Carter, Tate, and Richard Wyands – and the style is light, laidback, and recorded with a warm tone overall – in a mode that's almost a precursor to the CTI sound of the late 60s. Mike Maineri joins on vibes on one track – and titles include "Wholly Cats", "Rose Room", "As Long As I Live", and "A Smooth One". (SHMCD pressing.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

One of the most hard-wailing albums that Harold Mabern ever cut – a bit of a shift from some of his more lyrical modes, and a soul jazz smoker that's almost in a Prestige jazz funk mode! The combo here is great, and a bit of a shift for Harold – with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Hubert Laws ... CD
