CD (Item 82518) Tuff City/Funky Delicacies, Late 60s/Early 70s — Condition: New Copy

Lost funky gems from the rare Houston label Ovide – home to TSU Tornadoes and a heck of a lot of great older funk from the Lone Star state! The Houston sound here is really incredible – tightly snapping party funk that's very much in the style first laid out by Archie Bell & The Drells, but taken down into the depths of indie funky 45 territory here – in a way that mixes fast-riffing guitar with jazzy horns, really marking the Houston groove as one that's quite different from that of Memphis, New Orleans, or other southern soul scenes of the 60s! We totally love the jazzy undercurrents that run through most of these tunes – and the use of guitar, organ, and horns makes for a sound that's really fresh – especially when compared to other funky compilations! Titles include "Crackerjack" by The Americans of 72, "Get Your Point Over" by Sebastian Williams, "Football" by Acres Of Grass, "Ain't That Something" by Charles Berry & The Cherries, "Ain't Nothin Nowhere" by TSU Tornadoes, "Today's Man" by Mark Putney, "HLIC" by Bobo Mr Soul, "Hunching Sticks" by Americans of 68, "The Yankee Dance" by 4 Avalons, and "One Number Cancels The Other" by Ovide All-Stars. 17 tracks in all!  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
