Beautiful baroque soul from LA – and the kind of record you might pass up, but don't! The Friends of Distinction were always best known for their big hit version of "Grazing In the Grass" (not on this LP), but they were a pretty progressive soul group, and they spent a lot of time in the studio coming up with cool new ways to present their vocal style. This album includes a very cool "psyche" cut-up track called "Impressions", and it's two minutes worth of tape experiments that might have been lifted from The White Album. The cut then runs right into a great batch of groovy pop soul tracks, like "It's Just A Game Love", "Workin On A Groovy Thing", "It's Sunday", and "Let Yourself Go". (Cover has some wear, a couple of small stains, a name in marker on the front and back, and a bit of waviness along the opening. Labels have some marker.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Mercury, 1978. Good+
Excellent work from this smooth Chicago vocal group! The album may well be the best the group ever recorded – and it features some stellar ballad work produced with a nice spacey tone, almost in a Rose Royce mellow mode – by Jerry Butler's Fountain Productions team and by Clarence ... An interesting move for Don Covay – a singer who started out as a fairly straightforward soul performer, then got a bit bluesier in the early 70s, then shifted back to a more pop-oriented groove. This one's got Don working with arrangements by Bobby Martin and Dexter Wansel that still keep ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cheryl Lynn
Columbia, 1978. Very Good
Massive work from the great Cheryl Lynn – and a key bridge between late 70s disco and the newer grooves of the 80s club scene! The album's a mix of midtempo groovers with a few mellower tracks – and it's got a tight, slightly jazzy sound that was very fresh at the time, and which still ... LP, Vinyl record album
