A truly great score for a late Howard Hawks western starring John Wayne – the not terribly well-remembered Rio Lobo – but whatever the film's stature, Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack is wonderful! It works in a number of timelessly effective modes, from spare, but classically-written acoustic guitar, to galloping percussion and adventurous strings. La La Land issues it with the reverence the music deserves – the original soundtrack plus source and alternate cues, and bonus stereo versions.
