An under-appreciated gem by Rufus – the group's last album before Chaka left to depart on her successful early 80s solo career – and a nice one nonetheless! There's a trace of 80s groove in the mix – especially on the bass and percussion – but these elements are handled with all the warmth and jazziness that we've come to love from the group's 70s recordings – and Chaka's voice, as always, keeps things strongly soulful no matter what the setting! The album's overflowing with catchy groovers – and titles include "Secret Friend", "Jigsaw", "Better Together", "Music Man", "True Love", "Quandry", "Lilah", "Sharing The Love", and "Losers In Love". (Sealed. Cover has a cutout notch.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Ask Rufus
ABC, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold
A stone cold classic, and probably the best record Rufus or Chaka ever did! By this point, they've honed their soul style into a nice jazzy groove, and Chaka's voice is in total control – without too much pyrotechnics, and with a nice mellow sound. Includes the classic hit "Hollywood&qu ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wild Night
MCA, 1982. Very Good+
A lesser-known album from One Way, but a great one – and in some ways, even fresher and more appealing than some of their more famous work from the time! The set's still got plenty of the great One Way bounce in the mix – but there's also a deeper, more sensitive soul sound going on ... LP, Vinyl record album

A great follow-up to War's first Music Band album – and proof that the group was still plenty darn funky at the end of the 70s! Although different from their original Chicano funk groove, the style here is still totally great – long, drawn-out funk that's filled with plenty of sharp ... LP, Vinyl record album

I Fooled You This Time
MCA, 1982. Very Good
After working with Al Hudson on earlier records, Alicia struck out on her own a bit more for this album – a tasty batch of smooth soul tracks, with a few uptempo numbers in the tradition of her earlier work. Titles include "I Fooled You This Time", "Here's the Ticket", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Make Mine Bop
MCA, 1982. Very Good
The last record we've ever seen by this funky vocal combo – and every bit as tasty as their early work for Fantasy Records! Part of the reason for that is because the group's getting production here from Augie Johnson – who picked up plenty of funky jazz touches through his work with ... LP, Vinyl record album

An even tighter album than Debbie Jacobs' first for MCA – really wrapped around the strutting club guitar sound of producer Paul Sabu, and filled with tracks that bounce along with a tight little bottom! A dancefloor soul classic – one of the strongest albums ever by Al Hudson, Alicia Meyers, and the whole One Way crew! Tommie Young's probably best known to Dusty Groovers for her debut indie album Do You Feel The Same Way – but this is the record that probably brought her to the masses more than that one. One of the greatest soundtracks of the blacksploitation era – served up with some incredible grooves from maestro JJ Johnson! Great later work from Rufus – working here without Chaka Khan on vocals, but sounding even jazzier as a result!
