Herbie Mann — Stone Flute ... CD 13.99

Stone flute, or stoned flute, the album's got a really laidback feel – a sound that's very open-ended, and quite different from some of the crossover classics Herbie Mann was cutting a few short years before! The record's got the darkly brooding feel of some of his other work on the Vortex label – and features a subtle blend of softly-blown flute with guitar from Sonny Sharrock, vibes from Roy Ayers, and bass from either Miroslav Vitous or Ron Carter. There's some light added strings on most tracks, but they're arranged by William S Fischer – in ways that make them more sly sense of darkness in the background than standard sleepy accompaniment. Herbie and Fischer are a perfect combination here, one that makes for a surprising degree of depth – on titles that include "Waltz For My Son", "Miss Free Spirit", "Flying", "In Tangier", and "Pendulum". (In the die-cut gatefold cover. Cover has light wear & a few small stains.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Bossa Nova
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good
Very nice, very tight little bossa nova set by Eddie Harris from his early days at Vee Jay! The groove is very open, and Eddie's still at the stage where he can really cut the stuff. His solos ring out hard and cold above some great Lalo Schifrin arrangements, and Lalo also plays piano on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Merl Saunders
Fantasy, 1974. Near Mint-
We have to admit we've always been somewhat dismissive of Merl Saunders 70s records, perhaps because of the hippy association we have with these bay area recordings. But ultimately there's at least a little bit of funk peeking through on any of his Fantasy recordings, which gets a nice helping ... LP, Vinyl record album

Any Number Can Win
Verve, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sessions like this are proof that Jimmy was one of the most fantastic organ players ever – as his work with large arrangements (supplied here by Claus Ogerman) always seems to groove better than his work with small combos. His sound is impeccable, and he soars ahead of the rest of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
