One of Ben Sidran's biggest records from the 70s – a smooth combination of jazz, fusion, soul, and a bit of New Orleans groove! There's still a very unique feel to Sidran's music here – a sense of personality that really makes the whole thing sparkle – and which keeps the record from sounding too much like anyone else. Grooves are a great mix of jazz and soul elements – in territory that certainly has a 70s LA sort of quality, but which never gets too poppy or commercial – thanks to Ben's vocals, and mostly small combo backings from players who include Phil Upchurch on bass, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Larry Carlton on guitar, and Tony Williams on drums. Nick DeCaro adds in a bit of extra strings from time to time – and titles include "Silver's Serenade", "Charlie's Blues", "Be Nice", "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "One Way Grave", and "See You On The Other Side".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Don't Let Go
MCA/Blue Thumb (Japan), 1974. New Copy
Tight funky jazz from vocalist Ben Sidran – still very much in his best early mode, and playing with a really raw sound overall! Ben's vocals are in that down-home Mose Allison mode, but the real charm is the music – which features funky drums by Clyde Stubblefield, the man responsible ... CD

I Lead A Life
MCA/Blue Thumb (Japan), 1972. New Copy
Wonderful early work from Ben Sidran! The album's got a hip jazzy vocal style – similar to some of the best late 60s work by Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg, but also with New Orleans touches – as in the work of Mose Allison or Dr John! Sidran brings in a smoother, groovier feel than ... CD

Mercury/Vivid (Japan), 1971. New Copy
An obscure bit of LA pop from the early 70s – featuring the breathy Paige Claire, a heavenly vocalist with a sound like a porn star! The album's got arrangements by Al Capps and Harry Betts, and kind of an early 70s easy sound to it that works wonderfully with Paige's voice. She's a better ... CD

Brother Where Are You
Atlantic (Japan), 1973. New Copy
Sweet 70s funk from the great Oscar Brown – quite a change from his jazz-based work of the 60s, but a great new sitting for all of his wonderful wit and warmth! Brown's still a hell of a songwriter, and one with a very socially-conscious eye – sharper here than before, with lots of ... CD

El (UK), Early 60s. New Copy
A wonderful blend of jazz and poetry – sometimes sung, sometimes spoken – and served up in a set of very hip UK albums from the early 60s! First up is Loguerhythms/Songs From The Establishment – a solo set by singer Annie Ross, done after she left the company of Jon Hendricks and ... CD

Liquid Spirit
Blue Note, 2013. New Copy
Gregory Porter arrives on Blue Note Records – and the result is Porter's most fully-formed set so far – just the kind of album that will push him firmly into the limelight – a place that we've felt he's deserved for quite a few years! Porter's a hell of a singer, and a hell of a ... CD

Let's Talk About Love
Warner (Japan), 1962. New Copy
A very powerful little session from Joanie Sommers – and like most of her work from the time, one that's done in a great blend of jazz and mainstream pop! Orchestrations are by Tommy Oliver, and there's plenty of dynamic horn passages to keep things interesting – even on the mellower ... CD

Singin Ornette
Blue Serge (Italy), 2013. New Copy
A wonderful idea for a jazz vocal album – a set based entirely around the compositions of Ornette Coleman, served up at a level that respects all the complexity of the originals! Given Coleman's highly idiosyncratic approach, it's hard to imagine a singer finding his tunes easy to work with ... CD

Complete Atco Recordings
Atco/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy 2 CDs
Beautiful soul vocals from Dee Dee Warwick – the entirety of her work for Atco – all of it recorded between 1970 and 1972! Dee Dee had a pretty successful run as a solo singer for Mercury before moving to Atco, to say nothing of her pedigree as a session singer over the years, hitting ... CD

Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy
Early soul, late R&B, and plenty more – served up here in a mighty cool compilation that definitely lives up to its name! This one's perfect for a hot summer night – when the grooves always sound best when they're a bit laidback – the kind of mellow grinders and slower ... CD
