Billy Preston right in the middle of a classic 70s run – hitting a trademark blend of soul, jazz, and other groovy influences – all with a sound that's very much his own, and which puts him in the same company as Sly Stone or Stevie Wonder! Preston's market was a bit more mainstream than those two, but at this point in his career he's very much on top of his game – really pulling together all the experience of woodshedding in the 60s, and bursting forth with a sense of pop power and pride that's totally great! Billy plays a fair bit of different keyboards on the set – and rhythms run from the respected Preston romping modes, to others that are a bit more laidback and soulful. Titles include the hit "Nothing From Nothing", plus "St Elmo", "Sometimes I Love You", "You Are So Beautiful", "Creature Feature", "Tell Me You Need My Loving", "Sad Sad Song", and "Sister Sugar". Derby/Real Gone, 1963. New Copy
Easily one of the coolest, hippest, and most soulful records that Billy Preston ever cut – very different both from his famous work on A&M, and his early sides for Apple and Vee Jay – and done with a raw groove that makes each cut feel like some rare funky 45! The style here is a ... CD

A masterpiece of messed-up LA funk – and one of the crowning moments in the career of Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band! Charles and crew do an excellent job with all the tracks – most of which are more open ended than some of their earlier ones, and run on for ... CD

The Temptations going in all directions – and all of them pretty darn groovy too! The set's still heavy on the solid, righteous sound of Norman Whitfield – who gives some of the best cuts that psychedelic soul imprint he really perfected with the group – a quality that has a lot ... CD

With A Lot O' Soul
Gordy (Japan), 1967. New Copy
The Temptations pick up a lot of soul on this classic Motown set – a deeper, darker groove than ever before – the start of that fuzzy psychedelic soul style that made them one of the most inventive Motown acts of the late 60s! Deep basslines roll out strongly right from the start of ... CD

Pretty raw stuff from New Orleans pianist/vocalist James Booker! The 2CD set features live work that was recorded in 1977 at a small club in the Crescent City – a very spare date that has Booker playing and singing with no other accompaniment! The music's a great way to hear James in a ... CD

Sweet 70s funk from drummer James Black! The tunes were recorded in New Orleans, but have a bass-heavy groove that sounds a lot more like New York funk of the early 70s – tightly grooving with lots of rhythmic interplay, and a nice dose of spacey soul! About half the cuts have vocals – ... CD
