Tenors West – Jimmy Giuffre With The Marty Paich Octet

LP (Item 549614) GNP, Mid 50s — Condition: Used

LP, Vinyl record album

4.70 5

A nice little session of LA jazz – with a lot more fire than usual for this sort of set! Part of the reason for that is because Marty Paich's handling the arrangements – giving them a good swing that keeps all players moving in line. Another reason is that Jack "Mr. Bongo" Costanzo's on bongos – giving the set a nice little kick in the back line. Giuffre and Cooper play twin front tenors, and the group's also got horn work by Harry Klee and Bob Enevoldsen. Titles include "Tenors West", "Ballet Du Bongo", "Con-spirito", "Line For Lyons", and "The Dragon".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Brilliant work throughout – the last studio album ever cut by Lee Morgan, and a mindblowing session that always leaves us wondering how massive he would have become if he hadn't been tragically murdered shortly after it was recorded! Ok, so we hate Marian McPartland, both as a pianist and a radio announcer, but this LP kicks, and is waaaaay different from anything she ever did! Mindblowingly baroque funk from Brother Jack McDuff – an album that takes the initial Blue Note tripped-out groove of Moon Rappin, and pushes it to a whole new level!
