On Duke's Birthday
CD (Item 465063) Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1984 — Condition: New Copy
A great tribute to the late Duke Ellington – but one that's quite different than most of Duke's music! The album features a live performance by Mike Westbrook, recorded in honor of the 10th Anniversary of the passing of Ellington – all original Westbrook music, but scored around Ellington ideas, moods, and tones! The performance is by various groupings of British avant players – including Georgie Born on cello, Brian Godding on guitar, Kate Westbrook on tenor horn and voice, Phil Minton on trumpet and voice, and Chris Biscoe on saxes – and overall, the sound's a fair bit darker and sparer than Ellington – a nice interpolation of his passions, but taken to whole new directions. Titles include "Music Is", "East Stratford Too Doo", "Checking In At Hotel Le Prieure", and "On Duke's Birthday". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
