DeRobert & The Half-Truths — Soul In A Digital World ... CD 8.99

Raw funk and southern soul from DeRobert & The Half-Truths – a combo from Murfreesboro, TN who've knocked us out with a few very promising 45s – delivering in full on Soul In A Digital World! The title sums up the group's mission pretty well – blending raw, dirty live funk (we're guessing they absolutely tear it up on stage) with indelible grooves learned from decades of southern soul sounds. The group brings furiously paced funk vibe as sharply as any recent acts we've heard, but when they want to take it down to a simmer, it cooks just as well! DeRobert's vocals are passionate and real, backed excellently by raw drums and percussion, very nice guitar and bass, and a punchy horn section. The group is representing their own GED Soul Records – and they do so proudly! Titles include "Too Short", "The Joy", "Poor Man Walk", "I Swear I'm Not A Fool", "Too Busy", "I Know", "Take Me Out Of The Dark", "The Dole", "The Feel", "Got Soul In A Digital World" and more.  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Some of the most enigmatic work we've ever heard from Karl Hector & The Malcouns – still every bit as funky as before, but with a deeper, more organic approach overall – one that includes loads of sweet acoustic instrumentation and mighty nice percussion! Some of the deepest, darkest sounds we've ever heard from The Heliocentrics – and that's saying a lot, given the freak and fuzz of these guys' other work! Royal Potato, 2014. New Copy
One of the most solid records we've ever heard from drummer Stanton Moore – and a set that's got to be his greatest jazz session to date! Moore's still got all the playful kick he brought to his drums during more funk-based years – but he's working here in a trio with the wonderful ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sublime work from one of the coolest funky combos around – a group who aren't content to just hit the same funky styles as other outfits – and one who really stretch strongly in their pursuit of new sounds! Funky funky funky! A nice one on King that shows the direction James Brown would take in the 70s – a bit harder and more funky than before, with even more of a focus on the instrumental talents of the ensemble!
