CD (Item 603653) Jazzman (UK), 1987 — Condition: New Copy

One of the hippest records we've ever heard from the Atlanta scene of the 80s – a spiritual jazz set that feels like something that could have been recorded over a decade before – given the warm acoustic instrumentation, and righteous overall vibe! In fact, it may well have been the late 80s issue of this album that's kept it so lost over the years – a bit late in the game for any audiences digging this type of music, and with an odd date that's possibly gotten it missed by diggers mostly looking for 70s spiritual jazz sessions. Yet whatever the case, the album's a gem through and through – with these long, open tracks that build with a great blend of sax, flute, guitar, piano, and plenty of percussion – as well as the warm, solid basslines of Mamaniji Azanyah, the group's leader. There's a bit of vocals, but overall the album's instrumental – with a vibe that feels like some of the best mid 70s sounds on the Black Fire label. Titles include "The One", "In The Beauty Of Holiness", "Praise", "Guiding Light", and "I Will Surely Come Again".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
