4.70 5

A killer live set from Ramsey Lewis and his classic early 60s trio – a record that's not nearly as well known as The In Crowd, but every bit as great! Drummer Red Holt and bassist Eldee Young really get in some great elements here – working with Ramsey's piano in a groove that's far more than the standard trio mode of the time – and much more in a triangulated exchange of energy that's filled with life and joy throughout! Side one begins with a 12 minute "West Side Story Medley" – one that starts slow, but really builds with excitement as the tune rolls on – and other tunes include a version of "My Babe", with some funky cello work by Eldee Young; a soul-stepping take on "Something You Got"; Ramsey's original "The Caves"; and versions of "People", "Fly Me To The Moon", and "The Shelter Of Your Arms". (Gray label Argo pressing. Cover has light aging on the back, along the opening.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Stretching Out
Argo, 1960. Very Good+

French Cookin'
Argo, 1963. Very Good
Groovy little record that has this funky tenor giant playing a bunch of tracks with a Frenchy feel to them. Budd's joined by Hank Jones on piano, plus Kenny Burrell on guitar, and a nice Latin rhythm section that includes Joe Venuto on vibes and marimba and Willie Rodriguez on percussion. The ... Message
Argo, 1963. Near Mint-
A really hard groover from Illinois Jacquet's later years on Chess – a solidly smoking session that features plenty of organ and guitar! There's a gutbuckety groove here that's a lot like some of Willis Jackson's best work on Prestige at the time – a style that's based around the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Perform A Tribute To Clifford Brown
Argo, 1958. Very Good-
The great underrated vibist Lem Winchester plays a tribute to the late Clifford Brown, along with the classic Ramsey Lewis trio, which included Eldee Young and Redd Holt. Despite the lack of an actual trumpet on the date (although the cover has a crazy image of the group standing around the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sermon!
Blue Note, Early 60s. Good+
One of the Jimmy Smith "jam session" Blue Notes, with a large group that includes Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, George Coleman, Tina Brooks, and Art Blakey – nearly all of whom take long solos and dig deep to compete with each other. 3 long tracks, "The Sermon", "JOS&quo ...
