Set-Up
LP (Item 542342) Electraphonic, 2010 — Condition: New Copy
The City Champs are at it again – and sounding even funkier than the first time around! This set's an amazing batch of Hammond-heavy instrumentals – one that really revels in the lean, mean, Memphis heritage of Booker T & the MGs – with all the tight, funky elements that might imply! The City Champs come from the same scene as Booker – just 50 years later – and they bristle with energy we haven't heard from the Memphis scene in years – a totally right on the money, totally right in the pocket, totally right over the edge sort of funky groove – one that reminds us that there's still plenty of brilliant funky instrumentals out there these days, if you just know where to look! There's no fake retro modes going on here – no too-easy riffing either – and somehow, these guys just get it all totally right – a massive cohesion of Hammond, guitar, and drums – just augmented a bit with some extra horns at a few points, plus guest tambourine by the legendary Jack Ashford. Titles include "Drippy", "The Set-Up", "Ricky's Rant", "Crump Street", "Rigamarole", "Break It Up", "Comanche", "Chinatown", and a wonderful take on the "Theme From Mad Men". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
