CD (Item 599915) Futura (France), 1969 — Condition: New Copy

Way more than just your typical piano trio album – but that's no surprise, given that the group features Siegfried Kessler on piano, Barre Phillips on bass, and Steve McCall on drums! There's a really open, exploratory sort of sound here – the same sonic sensitivity you might have heard in work from the AACM around the same point – an inspiration that clearly comes from McCall's presence on the record, although we've also got to admit that the careful shadings from Phillips are also a tremendous element of the record, too. The whole thing's surprisingly rich and vibrant – and very carefully, thoughtfully put together – not just freedom for freedom's sake, but a real sense of finding a new direction. Titles include "Elyane", "Journal Violone", "Spikenard", "Silver Cloud", and "LB". CD features a full 22 minute version of "LB" – which was not on the album – and the unissued "Milestones".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
