One of the best Kenny Burrell albums ever! Kenny's in fine form in this rare live set, recorded in 1959 at the Five Spot with a group that includes the legendary Tina Brooks on tenor, plus Bobby Timmons or Roland Hanna on piano, Ben Tucker on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. The band is more firey than some of Kenny's other recordings – and that seems to drive him onto harder solos than usual, as you'll hear on tracks like "Birk's Works", "36-23-36", and "Hallelujah". Nice stuff! (Out of print, small cutout notch through case.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Laid Back
32 Jazz, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used
Obscure work from Kenny Burrell – material originally issued by Muse Records, most of it with a very laidback feel – as you'd guess from the title! The original sides were produced by Helen Keane, who'd done some of Bill Evans' greatest sets – and who had a real ear for the ... CD

Material recorded early in the Blue Note career of Jimmy Smith – but not issued until the mid 60s, and often overlooked at the time! The record's still in the spare trio mode of the early Jimmy Smith years – but is a bit lighter and more lyrical than before – a nice change from ... CD

Witch Doctor
Blue Note, 1961. Used
One of our favorite albums ever from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers – but a set that was unreleased by Blue Note for quite a few years! The set's one of two gems the group recorded in 1961, but which were held back until the end of the 60s – and it features a stellar version of the ... CD

What can we say? This is the ultimate Miles Davis album – the one that includes so many songs that we've heard way too much in Starbucks, in retail stores, or at a friend's house who claims to be a "jazz expert", but is really a yuppie dilettante. Yet somehow, over all the years, ... CD

You're definitely not at the opera with a set like this – a batch of well-crafted improvisations between drummer Sunny Murray and reedman Sabir Mateen – who plays alto, tenor sax, and flute throughout the course of the record! Like most of the best Eremite releases, this one is a live ... CD
