One of Sergio Mendes' most electric outings from the 70s – a tasty mixture of LA fusion, Brazilian rhythms, and the group's unique twin female vocal lead! The mix of sounds is wonderful – and makes for a really solid album that shows how much soul Sergio had soaked up in the decade he'd spent in as part of the LA musical scene. There's still a strong Brazilian element to the record – thanks to musicians who include Oscar Castro Neves, Claudio Slon, Paulinho Da Costa, Hermeto Pascoal, and Raul De Souza – but most of the lyrics are in English, and the tunes themselves have a blend of R&B and fusion that's plenty sunny and plenty soulful! Titles include "It's So Obvious I Love You", "Sunny Day", "Emorio", "Cut That Out", "It's Up To You", and the tasty instrumental "Shakara".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Shadow Of Your Smile
Verve, 1965. Near Mint-
One of Astrud Gilberto's greatest albums – and quite possibly our personal favorite! The record features beautifully understated arrangements by Joao Donato, Don Sebesky, and Claus Ogerman – and the instrumentation is a haunting mix of bossa rhythms with darker orchestrations that ... Humble People
Concord, 1985. Near Mint-
Almost a return to basics for Airto and Flora – singing here in more of a jazzy fusion style than on some of her late 70s R&B sessions. The Concord production almost gives the album the feel of a Tania Maria set for the label – using core jazzy backings, plus some expanded ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pretty great stuff from Jobim – later than the classic years, but with a dark sophisticated sound that's pretty darn compelling. The album features larger orchestrations by Claus Ogerman, and in a way, it's similar to the Jobim album on Decca from 1973 – in that it's got all the simple ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tower, Mid 60s. Very Good
Nice early stuff from Sergio – also issued as the album Brazil 65 on Capitol! That's Brasil 65, not Brasil 66 – a distinction that marks a key early stage for the great Sergio Mendes – heard here on one of his first albums to mix together bossa jazz and vocals! The approach here ... LP, Vinyl record album

Epic, Early 60s. Very Good
One of the greatest soundtracks ever – a record that set a whole new standard for audio representation of a film! The mad music for the set was composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, with lyrics by Vincius De Moraes – and performed by Luiz Bonfa on guitar – but despite such prime ... LP, Vinyl record album

First Priority, 1988. Very Good
Nice compilation including some non-LP cuts from the First Priority label, in its prime. All the tracks here are cut from the same, nice middle school hip hop cloth, with not much more than the MC's rhyming over spare beats in the Audio Two style. 11 tracks in all including MC Lyte & Positive ... Fantasy, 1974. Very Good Gatefold
Not the band's first album – as you might think from the "start" in the title – but a classic batch of jazzy, funky, and soulful grooves from The Blackbyrds – one of those combos that few groups could match back in the 70s! The set's got a beautifully put-together feel ... LP, Vinyl record album
